Year 8 Day 1

Venus of Willendorf, Don's MapsThank goodness the groups will be back soon! Surely I can find some couple as acolytes who can hunt, cook, make clothing, and do not have and are not expecting a very small and inquisitive child. Rhino and Torch Flower are already borderline on the food and clothing, and I can only hope that Torch Flower waits until Meerkat or someone of similar experience returns before she has her baby!

It has not discouraged her efforts to seduce me. Indeed, by the standards of the People she is at her most desirable when very obviously pregnant. Not by the standards of mine! Broad hips and full breasts, yes, but actual pregnancy …. How shall I put it? It elicits protectiveness, care, but not physical desire.

In the case of Torch Flower, even the protectiveness is muted.

Jarn’s Journal is the journal of a human-like alien stranded in Africa 125,000 years ago. He has met our ancestors, who because of his esper abilities persist in treating him as a god–much to his dismay. His story to date is on my author site; a longer version of this post is on my main blog. His story is the remote back story of the universe in which all of my science fiction is set.

  1. Heidi Ruby Miller says:

Great last line! Shows a little of Jarn’s dry sense of humor. 😉

  2. I don’t think Torch Flower is doing very well at seducing him.

  3. Love the last line. Paints the picture perfectly.

  4. tktoppin says:

Haha! Love this snippet. Like Heidi said, it shows Jarn’s dry sense of humour. I can also just see his ‘discomfort’ at her ‘charms’.

  5. Interesting to see Jarn’s base desires come to light. And, I too enjoyed Jarn’s little jab at Torch Flower.

    • The desire for offspring, and those characteristics in a mate that indicate the greatest prospect of her offspring surviving and having offspring of their own, is an evolutionary basic–nothing base about it. Jarn is attracted by those aspects of females that in his species change when ovulation is near. But in other ways the bonding between humans is based on different signals than was that between R’i’noids.

  6. T. M. Hunter says:

Hopefully Jarn learns that it’s not advisable to scorn a pregnant Earth woman, though… 😉

  7. Tara Quan says:

The last line is a very nice touch! Very interesting as usual.

  8. Gayle Ramage says:

Great snippet. I wonder if Torch Flower will end her attempts at some point or will Jarn have to let her know he is not interested.

  9. jccassels says:

I had to laugh at the last line! Tells everything you need to know about her.
