Year 6 Day 32

Well, they’re back.

sunrise. MorguefileI tried to explain my map, now transferred to a hide with Songbird and Meerkat’s help, to the gathered shamans. Songbird seems to have figured out that the map in some way corresponds to where I have been, though for the most part she considers it some sort of incomprehensible magic. Rather as I regard their ability to find their way around by using landmarks, I suspect.

The general reaction of the shamans could be summed up as “But we are standing here, on grass. How can we also be standing on that piece of hide?”

It might be possible to teach WildDog what a map means, but would it be wise? In fact, is it wise to let him grow up here? There are no other children here, and it has taken him only a few days to discover friendship with other children coming in. Songbird and Giraffe, likewise, are delighted to renew bonds with their old friends.

Jarn’s Journal is the fictional journal of a fictional, human-like alien who was stranded in Africa roughly 125,000 years ago. A slightly longer version of this post is on my main blog; the journal to date is on my author site. The Journal give some of the remote back story for my published books.

  1. Teaching basic geography to the natives should be an interesting (and humorous) exercise. Has it really been six years? My, how time flies!

  2. T. M. Hunter says:

I could stop chuckling about the “how can we also be standing on that piece of hide?” line. 🙂

  3. S.C. Wade says:

Once again, a nice snippet. After reading the line: “But we are standing here, on grass. How can we also be standing on that piece of hide?” I had an image of one of them taking the map and standing on it, and be like “NOW we are standing here.” LOL…..maybe you just had to be in my mind. 😀

  4. Tara Quan says:

I fourth everyone’s comments – “But we are standing here, on grass. How can we also be standing on that piece of hide?” is a great line.

  5. I’d never considered how it would be so difficult to explain such a concept as maps and geography to someone who had not been exposed to it before. I feel like it’s insightful of you to note those differences that would definitely exist in perception.

  6. Haven’t we all stood on a map at one time or another (just for perspective, of course)?

  7. S.A. Check says:

As always, great perspective in bringing concepts we take for granted in a new light with the natives and Jarn. I can see the next conversation when Jarn tries to explain the planet is actually round.

  8. amergina says:

I have a feeling WildDog will become very important. But then having a God as a… um… Godfather? Yeah, that might make things interesting.
